Japanese Spokeshave begins...

Now I have to make a choice of wood for the stock here, from the top:
Hornbeam, Jarrah, Hickory or Box.

I think it needs to be Box or Jarrah
(if you remember I was going on about Jarrah in a previous post)
It is my very last piece of an old fence post I had, literally the last piece, well nearly!

I had been saving it for a spokeshave and it is really long...
Umm decision made I think, Jarrah - might look a little like Red Oak?!?!

  1. Looking forward to seeing this finished. I'd go with Boxwood, that's one timber I'd love to use. Do you mind if I ask where you bought the iron? I'm looking for something of similar size for a travisher I'm planning.

  2. Hi David, yes the boxwood would be lovely... but I just have a funny feeling... Perhaps one blade and 2 Dai's? Curved base and straight, different bedding angles? ummm... Email Stuart at Tools from Japan, let him know where you saw it, mine was Blue steel and Wrought Iron, its a nice blade.

  3. Go for it. I'd love to see how they both come out and how they perform. I'm trying to work out how to make a few travishers and I think something like this would be perfect. Thanks for letting me know, I'll send him an email.
